Bierbrouwerij De Boog, Utrecht, Netherlands

This former brewery 'De Boog' is located on the wharf of the Oudegracht in Utrecht. It was once the most famous beer brewery in Utrecht. The company was founded in 1584. In the centuries that followed, it developed into the city's largest steam brewery. In the 1610s there were no fewer than 22 breweries active in Utrecht. Beer was the number one popular drink in those centuries. At the height of its boom, around 1800, De Boog employed 25 'hands'. The brewery accounted for more than half of the total beer production in the city. The location on the Oudegracht was ideal for the supply of raw materials and the transportation of finished products by ship. In 1897 the brewery had to close. This is because of the growing competition from Bavarian beers in particular. Today, houses are located in the building. The complex is a national monument.

Op de werf aan de Oudegracht in Utrecht staat deze voormalige bierbrouwerij 'De Boog'. Ooit was het de bekendste bierbrouwerij van Utrecht. Het bedrijf werd in 1584 opgericht. In de eeuwen daarna ontwikkelde het zich tot de grootste stoombierbrouwerij van de stad. In de jaren 1610 waren er in Utrecht maar liefst 22 brouwerijen actief. Bier was in die eeuwen volksdrank nummer één. Op het hoogtepunt van de bloei, rond 1800, had De Boog 25 'knechten' in dienst. De brouwerij nam meer dan de helft van de totale bierproductie in de stad voor z’n rekening. De vestiging aan de Oudegracht was ideaal voor het, per schip, aanvoeren van grondstoffen en transpsorteren van gereed product. In 1897 moest de brouwerij sluiten. Dit vanwege de groeiende concurrentie van met name Beierse bieren. Tegenwoordig zijn er woningen in het pand gevestigd. Het complex is een rijksmonument.
