Herengracht Maarssen

The (Utrechtse) Vecht runs through the middle of the village of Maarssen. Many monumental buildings were built on either side around 1700 by Amsterdam merchants. The photo shows a view of a row of facades on the Herengracht on the north bank/quay of the Vecht. These buildings were also built around 1700 and, without exception, have national monument status. Walking along this canal, after a few hundred meters you arrive at the country estate of Doornburgh (see previous posts). The entire area has protected village status.

De (Utrechtse) Vecht loopt midden door het dorp Maarssen. Aan weerszijden zijn rond 1700, door Amsterdamse kooplieden, veel monumentale panden gebouwd. De foto toont het zicht op een gevelrij op de Herengracht aan de noordoever/kade van de Vecht. Ook deze panden zijn rond 1700 gebouwd en hebben, zonder uitzondering, de status rijksmonument. Langs deze gracht wandelend komt men na een paar honderd meter uit bij buitenplaats Doornburgh (zie vorige posts). Het hele gebied heeft de status beschermd dorpsgezicht.
