| Back in Zeist we see the country estate "Ma Retraite" on the Utrechtseweg. A country house built in 1897 to a design in Italian eclectic style by A. Salm G. Bzn. The Haarlem garden architect L.A. Springer, with whom Salm collaborated a lot, was commissioned to lay out the park. A year and a half later the garden and the house were finished. In 1930 the last resident died and the country estate ceased to exist. The house was rented out and served as a family pension between 1937 and 1940. In 1947 the house was given a purpose as a boys' boarding school under the name Huize Sint Jan. In January 1976 a fire broke out, making the demise of the house seem inevitable. It was not until 1987 that the house was restored and given an office purpose. The restoration was accompanied by major changes. The front facade was spared and restored to its former glory. The building has the status of national monument. However, this protection is primarily focused on the front facade, with the other facade sides being of secondary importance. |
Terug in Zeist zien we aan de Utrechtseweg buitenplaats "Ma Retraite". Een in 1897 naar ontwerp van A. Salm G. Bzn in Italiaans eclectische stijl gebouwd landhuis . De Haarlemse tuinarchitect L.A. Springer, met wie Salm veel samenwerkt, krijgt de opdracht voor de parkaanleg. Ruim anderhalf jaar later zijn de tuin en het huis klaar. Ik 1930 overlijdt de laatste bewoner en houdt de buitenplaats op te bestaan. Het huis wordt verhuurd en fungeert tussen 1937 en 1940 als een familie pension. In 1947 krijgt het huis een bestemming als jongensinternaat onder de naam Huize Sint Jan. In januari 1976 breekt er brand uit waarmee het de ondergang van het huis onafwendbaar lijkt. Pas in 1987 wordt het huis gerestaureerd en krijgt het een kantoorbestemming. De restauratie ging gepaard met ingrijpende wijzigingen. Daarbij is de voorgevel ontzien en in oude luister hersteld. Het pand heeft de status rijksmonument. Deze bescherming richt zich echter primair op de voorgevel, waarbij de andere gevelzijden van ondergeschikt belang zijn. |
